Why LOUP Is Speakerphone-First Instead of a Small Smartphone

Removing the browser, camera and text stack changes both the product and the firmware architecture.

Current. Current technical engineering note derived from LOUP device, firmware, telephony, audio, OTA and production work.

The first engineering constraint behind Why LOUP Is Speakerphone-First Instead of a Small Smartphone was concrete: LOUP is designed around deliberate voice calls, not around shrinking a general-purpose phone into a smaller enclosure.

The device needs contacts, call state, audio, Wi-Fi, OTA and a small status UI; it does not need a browser engine, social feed, camera pipeline or arbitrary messaging surface. That reduction removes large classes of UI state, storage, permissions and attack surface while making telephony quality much more visible.

I kept the experiment narrow by changing one variable, capturing the observable result, and comparing it with a preserved working build before moving on. Evidence marker: speakerphone-first.

A narrow product can demand deeper engineering in the few paths it keeps. For LOUP, audio reliability and call control matter more than feature count. In practice that keeps the next LOUP change measurable because the baseline remains available for comparison.
