USB-C Is Not the Same Thing as a Factory Debug Strategy

One external connector does not remove the need for reliable programming and recovery access.

Current. Current technical engineering note derived from LOUP device, firmware, telephony, audio, OTA and production work.

The important detail in USB-C Is Not the Same Thing as a Factory Debug Strategy was not the component name but the contract around it. LOUP uses a single USB-C connector, but production still needs dedicated debug and programming pads on the PCB.

Factory programming, board recovery and low-level diagnostics should not depend on the consumer connector being fully assembled or on the application firmware being healthy. Test pads create a controlled electrical access path for fixtures and failure analysis.

The acceptance test was written around observable behaviour rather than whether a task, container or peripheral merely reported that it had started. Evidence marker: usb-c-debug-pads.

A polished external interface and a maintainable production board solve different problems. Good hardware keeps both. That gives the team a concrete acceptance condition and a rollback point rather than a subjective sense that the build is probably better.
