Two-Device Local Calls Are a Better Milestone Than a Single Loopback Test

A real endpoint pair exposes assumptions hidden by softphones and local echo tests.

Current. Current technical engineering note derived from LOUP device, firmware, telephony, audio, OTA and production work.

The practical ownership question in Two-Device Local Calls Are a Better Milestone Than a Single Loopback Test was simple to state and harder to prove. LOUP development prioritized a two-device local call before scaling the fleet or adding more backend features.

Two physical units exercise independent clocks, registrations, microphone paths, speakers, packet timing and call state. A softphone remains useful as a reference, but device-to-device testing proves the embedded implementation on both ends at once.

The debugging order stayed conservative: verify wiring and state transitions first, then tune performance only after correctness had been established. Evidence marker: two-device-local-test.

Scale starts with a representative pair. One endpoint talking to a desktop client is not yet proof of a device fleet. The broader result is a system that can be changed incrementally because each layer has a measurable responsibility and a known recovery path.
