SIP and 5G Core Troubleshooting Started Converging for Me

Different protocols, same debugging discipline: establish state, identify the boundary, then follow the next dependency.

Lab Note. Reconstructed in 2026 as a technical lab note from the 2023 mobile-networking study period. The archive date indicates the period covered; the current site publication date is shown separately.

By this point the most useful thing I had learned from SIP was not a header or response code. It was a debugging habit. Establish the current state, identify the next dependency, and verify what the wire actually shows.

That method transferred almost directly into 5G Core work. SIP registration depends on transport, authentication and location state. 5G registration depends on access signalling, identity, authentication, security and subscriber context. The protocols are very different, but both become manageable once I stop treating the whole procedure as one event.

The same separation helps with media and user plane. SIP can complete while RTP fails. A UE can register while the PDU session or N3 path fails. In both cases, successful signalling does not prove the forwarding path.

This convergence changed how I wrote notes. Instead of documenting products, I started documenting boundaries: signalling versus media, control plane versus user plane, configuration versus observed state, policy versus forwarding. Those boundaries survive software changes much better than command syntax does.
