Pending Alerts Are Useful During Change Windows

A deployment may push a metric over threshold without immediately firing because the configured `for` period has not elapsed.

Current. Current production-engineering note derived from the hserver observability deployment, runtime measurements, alert rules, dashboards, and recovery work in September 2026.

A deployment may push a metric over threshold without immediately firing because the configured for period has not elapsed. What made the issue measurable was Prometheus pending alert state. Seeing pending conditions during a change window gives operators time to decide whether the metric is a harmless transient or the start of a regression.

I classify this as progressive incident detection. The useful debugging sequence is to confirm the signal, compare it with the neighboring subsystem, then look at logs or detailed metrics only after the failure domain is smaller.

The production rule that came out of it is: Keep pending panels visible during rollout and do not treat zero firing alerts as proof that the change has fully stabilized. This is deliberately more specific than adding another broad alert with no response procedure.

Commit b65d5d4 is the repository evidence behind the note. It provides the concrete configuration or fix that turned the observation into a repeatable monitoring control.
