Local PBX Testing Removes the Internet Before It Removes Complexity

A LAN test still exercises SIP, RTP, codecs and clocks while excluding WAN variability.

Current. Current technical engineering note derived from LOUP device, firmware, telephony, audio, OTA and production work.

I stopped treating this part of LOUP as a black box while working on Local PBX Testing Removes the Internet Before It Removes Complexity. The early LOUP priority was local two-device testing before remote PBX dependence and broader network paths.

Running the PBX close to the endpoints removes ISP routing, public NAT and Internet jitter from the first diagnosis without turning the call into a fake loopback. The real SIP and RTP stack still runs, so failures found locally are high-value endpoint or server issues.

Logs and measurements were used to decide whether the fault lived before or after the boundary, then the smallest falsifiable change was tested. Evidence marker: local-pbx-test.

Reduce the failure domain before increasing realism. A local distributed system is often the best intermediate test environment. The resulting test is small enough to rerun after later changes, which is what turns one successful experiment into engineering evidence.
