Debug Pads Are Insurance for the Units That Do Not Boot

Production fixtures need a recovery path below the application firmware.

Current. Current technical engineering note derived from LOUP device, firmware, telephony, audio, OTA and production work.

I stopped treating this part of LOUP as a black box while working on Debug Pads Are Insurance for the Units That Do Not Boot. LOUP explicitly requires programming and debug pads even though USB-C exists on the finished product.

A failed bootloader, damaged connector or incomplete assembly should not make the board impossible to inspect. Fixture access to power, UART or programming signals lets the factory recover or classify failures before they are mistaken for software defects.

Logs and measurements were used to decide whether the fault lived before or after the boundary, then the smallest falsifiable change was tested. Evidence marker: debug-program-pads.

Design for diagnosis while the PCB is still easy to change. Hidden access is cheap compared with blind failure analysis. The resulting test is small enough to rerun after later changes, which is what turns one successful experiment into engineering evidence.
