CPRI and eCPRI Made the RAN Transport Boundary Much Clearer

The move from digitized radio samples toward packetized fronthaul explains a lot about modern RAN architecture.

CPRI and eCPRI stopped looking like two generations of the same cable once I focused on what crosses the fronthaul boundary. Traditional CPRI can move a very large amount of relatively raw radio information between radio and baseband functions. That makes timing predictable but bandwidth expensive.

Packetized fronthaul changes the engineering trade. More processing can move toward the radio side, while Ethernet transport carries structured traffic between functional splits. The result is more flexibility and a much stronger dependence on packet timing, synchronization and transport design.

The practical lesson for me was that RAN transport is not just 'backhaul closer to the antenna'. Where the PHY is split determines bandwidth, latency and synchronization requirements. Once that boundary is clear, Open RAN discussions become easier to evaluate without treating every interface as interchangeable.
